The Macallan's TIME:SPACE Sherry Cask: Twenty Years, One Bodega
The third TIME:SPACE entry is a 20-year-old single malt at 44.8 percent, finished in the first 200 casks seasoned with The Macallan's own Valdespino sherry. RRP £1,100.

The Macallan has released the third entry in its TIME:SPACE series, and it is the one the whole series was building toward. TIME:SPACE Sherry Cask is a single malt aged for a minimum of 20 years, bottled at 44.8 percent ABV, and priced at an RRP of £1,100 for 700ml. It is the first whisky ever finished in casks seasoned with The Macallan's own Valdespino sherry.
The distinction matters. The Macallan's relationship with Jerez is the foundation of its house style, and until now it was a purchasing relationship: sherry casks bought from the market, seasoned by other people's sherry. This release marks the moment the distillery began drawing on its own supply. The whisky began its journey on The Macallan Estate in Speyside, then was married in a selection of the first 200 casks from the Valdespino bodega in Jerez de la Frontera, filled in the brand's 200th anniversary year.

That supply chain is now one of the most vertically integrated in the industry. Edrington, The Macallan's owner, took a 50 percent stake in Bodegas Grupo Estévez, which owns the Valdespino sherry producer, in 2023. It also acquired the Vasyma cooperage in Jerez, and took a 50 percent share in the Tevasa Forestal Group, which brought control of sawmills in northern Spain and a second Jerez cooperage. Under that arrangement, Valdespino supplies a specially created sherry, said to be similar in character to oloroso, which seasons oak casks that are then shipped to Scotland to be filled at the distillery. The seasoning sherry itself goes on to become Valdespino Vermouth Origen. Nothing is wasted; everything is owned.
Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan's master whisky maker, described the release as "an exciting milestone in The Macallan's ownership of our Sherry seasoning, as the first whisky to be influenced by casks seasoned with our own Valdespino Sherry." It is a careful formulation, and an accurate one: the milestone is the ownership, not just the liquid.

The distillery describes the whisky as rich yet refined. The published notes promise figs, medjool dates, caramelised nuts, chocolate truffles and warming spices on the aroma, moving to bramble jam, treacle toffee, espresso and chocolate-coated cherries with gentle oak on the palate. Those are The Macallan's notes, reported here as the house presents them, and they read like a catalogue of everything sherry-seasoned oak is supposed to do. Euan Kennedy, the lead whisky maker, has said the team filled those 200 anniversary casks without knowing exactly what the outcome would be: an honest admission that even the most controlled supply chain ends with a cask doing what casks do.
The presentation follows the collection's signature language: a circular vessel in a specially created case said to be inspired by the Palomino grapes used in sherry-making and the golden sun of Andalusia. The launch is accompanied by a documentary narrated by photographer Steve McCurry and sommelier Josep Roca, which tells you something about the register The Macallan is operating in. This is not a tasting note with a bottle attached; it is a brand statement about mastery, and the bottle is the evidence. It also arrives at a useful moment for Edrington: in the company's full-year reporting this June, the core Macallan range was one of the bright spots even as overall revenue fell, a reminder that the top end of the market is where the brand's pricing power still lives.

The release mechanics are deliberately exclusive. TIME:SPACE Sherry Cask launched on 17 September 2026, available only at The Macallan Boutique at Harrods, with a wider rollout across UK speciality retail following through October. A 20-year age statement at £1,100 sits in the collection's established pricing, and it arrives at a moment when age-stated whisky from the top tier still commands a premium that younger, no-age-statement releases cannot. The Macallan is betting that the declaration of time remains the most persuasive claim a bottle can make.
There is a structural point worth making beneath the luxury packaging. Where most distilleries buy seasoned casks from the trade, The Macallan now seasons its own, from its own bodega, in its own cooperages, with its own sherry. TIME:SPACE Sherry Cask is the first tangible fruit of that investment, and the industry's other sherry-cask houses will be watching to see whether the liquid justifies the capital. The answer is in the 200 casks. There will not be more of this one.
